Well Grafted Table

72 wide - 48 deep - 30 tall

The top of this table is grafted California walnut. This remarkable wood came from a walnut orchard in Lake Country. The darker wood is black walnut, planted when it was a bit larger than your thumb as the root stock for the orchard. The lighter wood is English walnut, which was grafted to the root stock because of the more desirable walnuts it would produce. The darker area between the two is the interface where they grew together. This area seems equal in strength to the wood on either side. The tree was about 24 inches in diameter when it was cut. The table base and the top edge band are eastern ash. The curved parts were laminated from thin strips pressed into a mold. The base members are joined with mortise and tenon joints.
